How to Diagnose a Lawn or Plant Problem Before You Treat It

Nearly every wasted dollar in yard care comes from treating the wrong problem. Fungicide does nothing for grub damage, grub control does nothing for dollar spot, and both are useless if the real issue is a dull mower blade or compacted soil. Diagnosis first, product second. Here is how the process works.

Rule out the boring causes before reaching for a chemical

Most lawn symptoms are cultural, not biological. Dull mower blades tear grass instead of cutting it, leaving frayed tips that brown within days and look convincingly like disease across a whole lawn. Mowing too short, under about 2.5 inches for most cool-season grasses, starves roots and invites weeds. Compacted soil from foot traffic or vehicles produces thin, struggling turf that no fertilizer will fix.

Check these first: blade sharpness, mowing height, how recently the area was watered, whether anything was spilled or parked there, and whether a downspout or air conditioner drains onto the spot. A surprising share of mystery dead patches turn out to be dog urine, spilled fertilizer, buried construction debris or a leaking hose.

Read the pattern โ€” it usually names the cause

Pattern is the most diagnostic single clue. Sharp geometric lines and straight edges point to something mechanical or chemical: a spill, scald from a hot surface, a spray miss, or a buried obstruction. Irregular, spreading, roughly circular patches suggest a living cause such as fungal disease, insects or an animal.

Uniform yellowing across an entire lawn generally means a nutrient deficiency, high pH locking up iron, or drought stress rather than disease. Damage concentrated along a driveway or sidewalk usually means heat and reflected light. Damage only in shade points to insufficient light or a shade-specific disease.

Do the tug test and the soap test

For a brown patch in turf, grab the grass and pull gently. If it lifts away like a loose carpet with no roots attached, you have root-feeding grubs. Dig a square foot of sod four inches deep and count them. More than five or six white C-shaped larvae per square foot justifies treatment; fewer does not.

If the grass stays firmly rooted, look at individual blades for lesions, banding or spots, which indicate fungal disease. For surface-feeding insects such as chinch bugs, sod webworms and armyworms, mix a couple tablespoons of dish soap into a gallon of water and drench a square yard at the edge of the damage. Irritated insects come to the surface within a few minutes.

For plants, check the leaves in order: pattern, position, texture

Yellowing between the veins while the veins stay green usually indicates iron or manganese deficiency, often caused by high soil pH rather than an actual shortage in the soil. Uniform yellowing of the oldest, lowest leaves first typically means nitrogen deficiency. Brown crispy leaf margins point to drought, salt or fertilizer burn, while brown soft spots point to overwatering or fungal infection.

Position matters: damage starting at the bottom and moving up usually means a soil or root problem, while damage starting at the top or on new growth suggests insects, sun scorch or a nutrient that is immobile in the plant. And always check the undersides of leaves โ€” aphids, spider mites, whiteflies and scale all hide there and are frequently missed entirely.

Test the soil before buying anything expensive

A soil test through your county extension office typically costs $15 to $30 and is the highest-value diagnostic in yard care. It returns pH plus phosphorus, potassium and micronutrient levels, and pH alone explains an enormous share of unexplained yellowing and poor growth.

Most turf and garden plants want pH between about 6.0 and 7.0. Outside that range, nutrients that are physically present in the soil become chemically unavailable to roots, so you can fertilize repeatedly, see no improvement, and conclude wrongly that you have a disease. Correcting pH with lime or sulfur is slow but it fixes the actual cause.

Treat at the right time, and read the label as a legal document

Timing determines whether a treatment works at all. Pre-emergent herbicide must go down before weed seeds germinate, typically when soil temperatures reach about 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and does nothing once weeds are visible. Grub control is most effective against young larvae in early to mid summer, not against mature grubs in fall. Fungicide is largely preventive and is far less effective once a disease has run through an area.

Then follow the label exactly, including the rate. Applying more than labeled is both illegal and a common way to burn a lawn outright. Avoid applying anything to drought-stressed turf or in temperatures above roughly 85 degrees, and never spray herbicide under the drip line of trees and shrubs whose feeder roots extend well beyond the canopy.

Why is my grass turning yellow?
The most common causes, in rough order of frequency, are nitrogen deficiency, iron deficiency caused by high soil pH, overwatering that suffocates roots, and drought stress. If the yellowing is uniform across the whole lawn it is almost certainly nutritional or water-related rather than a disease. Patchy yellowing that spreads outward is more likely fungal.
How do I tell grub damage from lawn disease?
Use the tug test. Grub-damaged turf pulls up easily in sheets because the roots have been eaten away, and you will find white C-shaped larvae in the top few inches of soil. Diseased grass stays rooted, and the damage shows on the blades themselves as spots, lesions or banding. Increased bird, skunk or raccoon digging is a strong secondary sign of grubs.
What are the small brown spots all over my lawn?
Numerous small silver-dollar-sized spots that merge over time are frequently dollar spot, a fungal disease favored by warm days, cool nights and morning dew. Look for hourglass-shaped tan lesions on individual blades to confirm. Improving nitrogen, watering early in the morning instead of the evening, and removing morning dew resolves mild cases without any fungicide.
Should I treat for grubs preventively every year?
Generally no. Preventive treatment is worth it only if you have had confirmed damage in the last year or two, or if your neighborhood has recurring pressure. The threshold for treatment is roughly five to six grubs per square foot. Below that, a healthy lawn tolerates them without visible damage, and routine preventive application mostly costs money and harms beneficial insects.
Why do my plant leaves have holes but I cannot find any insects?
Most chewing insects feed at night. Check with a flashlight after dark for slugs, snails, earwigs, cutworms and Japanese beetles. Slug damage leaves irregular holes plus a slime trail; caterpillar damage leaves ragged edges plus small dark droppings; and clean semicircular notches cut from leaf margins are usually leafcutter bees, which are beneficial pollinators and should be left alone.
